Cap-net conceived
Cap-Net was conceived in 1996 at the second UNDP Symposium on Water Capacity Development held in Delft, The Netherlands.

Phase I was launched and hosted by UNESCO-IHE Water Institute for Water Education (now IHE-Delft) with DGIS funding.
Phase II was funded by Norway, DGIS and Sida coinciding with the secretariat relocation to Pretoria, South Africa hosted by the Water Research Commission. Start of the EUWF project (Africa and Caribbean countries).
Start of Phase III was funded by Sida and DGIS. EUWF project was completed.
Phase IV initiated under the UNDP Water and Ocean Governance Programme supported by Sida. This coincided with the move of the secretariat to Rio de Janeiro, Brazil.
In 2018 there was a decision to move onto a Global Secretariat. Since 2019 Cap-Net is being hosted by the Global Water Partnership Organisation.
